There was a time when I was a booktuber and posted a video about this but I wanted to share with you the series I will not be finishing. This will be posted in two parts because it’s a long list! I’ll let you know why I won’t be finishing these series. The titles of each book will lead you to the Goodreads page if you’re interested picking it up.
Torn by K.A. Robinson is a New Adult series. This series includes 7 books and I only read the first book, rated it a 2 star. I couldn’t stand the the hardcore love triangle and the Main Character just highly got on my nerves. I didn’t understand the whole “he’s like my brother” to “we are now dating”….girl what? The only thing I enjoyed was the writing and how fast paced it was. Other than that? No thanks.
Collide by Gail McHugh is also a New Adult. This one is a duology. I was actually rooting for this book till the drama got repetitive and another Main Character that is super annoying. I didn’t agree with any of her decisions. I liked that the story was written in 3rd person so we get to see both main characters thought process. But that’s about it. I don’t care for the characters to read the other book.
Hexed (The Witch Hunter) by Michelle Krys I LOVED THE FIRST BOOK!!!! I had high hopes for this witchy YA series till the 2nd book came out and the author decided to through in every single YA Trope possible. I don’t understand why she did that, it was going great. The tropes were not needed but then again that’s just my opinion. Wah!!!
The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon I really wanted to like this book but I couldn’t do it. The whole glossary in the back of the book just killed it for me. I read for enjoyment and I honestly felt like I was in school again scrolling to the back of the textbook to find the definition. No thanks.
Chaos Walking Trilogy by Patrick Ness I read about 150 pages of this book and then DNFed (did not finish) it. I couldn’t do it anymore. So slow! I did hear the series gets better, however, I am at a point with my reading that I don’t like wasting my time on books I am not interested in. Nor do I like to force myself through a book.
Unearthly by Cynthia Hand is a nephilim/fallen angels series which I love reading those kinds of books!!! I enjoyed this book, however, I felt like it was very much the same as other Fallen Angel YA books I have read so I won’t be continuing them. It didn’t feel authentic to me.
Teardrop by Lauren Kate is pretty much a Atlantis/underwater-ish kind of book and I feel like these books with this theme aren’t done right. The first book was so slow and although I did buy the second book, I will not be picking it up. Especially after reading some of the reviews on Goodreads and also seeing the drop in ratings compared to the 1st book. I can’t even remember most of the book. It’s one of those forgettable books.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor I loved the first book and then the second book I found to be awfully slow so once I had started the third book, I was over it. I read about 80 pages and couldn’t do it anymore. I have no interest in finishing the last book. I have so many other books I would rather read. The world was beautifully written and the characters were super cool but I’ll pass.
White Rabbit Chronicles by Gena Showalter. Soooooooo here’s my problem with this one. I’m a pastors daughter and I was born and raised in the Christian religion (I don’t consider myself a Christian) but I learned A LOT about the Bible, etc. While reading this book, I found Christian themes in this book and I honestly felt like I was reading the Bible with zombies in it (no offense if you have your own beliefs) and I just couldn’t do it. I couldn’t differentiate between the Bible and this book. I was honestly rolling my eyes SO FREAKING MUCH! When I went to the authors website, I read about her converting to Christianity and everything all made sense to me. I definitely will not be reading this at all.
And that is it for this post, I will be posting part 2 in 2 days. Have you read any of these books? What did you think of them?
The Chaos Walking Series is worth finishing, I promise.

Awww man! I’m sad to hear that about the Alice in Zombieland series. That’s one I’ve been wanting to read but now I’m torn because well I’m not sure I want to read that kind of material (since I’m an atheist and all). I’d be rolling my eyes too 😣

Lol! I mean a lot of people loved it and didn’t even see the religious aspects to me. So I don’t want come out as a “don’t read this because it has religion in it” but UGH I JUST CANNOT DO IT!!!!!!!!!! Literally wanted to punch my eyes out while reading it!

I might check it out and read a couple chapters so I can see if I see it. I wasn’t raised in a religious house but I do know about the bible (only to defend myself to the extreme people here in the south). But I’m going to go into it with no expectations

I read all the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series and I really liked it. It did get tiresome in parts, but I thought it was worth the read.

The world is beautiful and the characters were super cool to imagine. But like you said it does get tiresome and since I already experienced that with the second and third book, I just don’t have the strength to finish it when I can get to other books that won’t make me feel bored or slumpy. The last book got me into a major reading slump. =/

I almost bought The Bone Season a few days ago. I was on the fence and now I think I’ll skip it. And 7 books with a love triangle? Oh, hell no! I don’t blame you for giving up on that one. I own Daughter of Smoke and Bone on Kindle and I bought the other two on a bargain sale in hardback. I still haven’t read a single page. I’ve heard they’re a bit slow. Can’t wait to see what’s on part 2. 🤗

Imagine reading 7 books with a glossary in the back? I would hope to graduate with a degree by the end of the series lol! I’m one of those people that rarely like hyped up series so maybe you’ll enjoy Daughter of Smoke and Bone way more than me…Part 2 is going to cause a bit of controversy lol =x

No way! I would freak out. I almost didn’t read Nevernight because of the footnotes, but I was glad I did later on. I can’t even imagine all those books with glossaries. I don’t want to feel like I’m in school when I read, which is why I’m not the biggest fan of John Green after reading An Abundance of Katherines. Those math equations were awful. I was like no John Green, why are you doing this to me? 😂

Lol that’s another book I have that I will not be reading! I read to escape not to be apart of school. GAHHH!!!

Yes! Exactly! I guess I’m too old now for some of these high school books. Some I love and can totally relate and others I’m like why am I reading this? lol

Same here!!!!! I completely understand

Ooh, controversy. Yes! I love a good rant mixed with some drama. Bring it on! I hope The Raven Boys is on that list because I cannot get into that book for the life of me. I don’t see what everyone else does at all.

Lmao between you and me, it’s number one on that list.

YES!! 🙌 Finally someone who will bash that series! I plan to finish a little more of the book than what I have read so far just so I can write my rant review that will get everyone’s panties all twisted up in a bunch. 😂

I AM GOING TO READ THAT AND GIVE IT ALL THE LIKES!!

I can see why. Most of it is really confusing and there’s so much mythology that you don’t understand and it’s slow paced. But I hear the series just gets better and better and I did enjoy The Raven Boys because it kept me reading. I’m the kind of person who, when I don’t understand something, I am overcome by the desire to understand it.

My part 2 will explain why I don’t want to continue with the series. I completely understand you, because I am the same. I like twisted worlds and getting sucked into understanding what’s going on but The Raven Boys is just a different reason why.

Ah, I see. Well, I look forward to your explanation then.

I’m usually the type of person that wants to find out what’s going and understand it, but I didn’t have that same desire with The Raven Boys. I’ve now attempted to read it 3 times and I’m only up to 27% on my Kindle. It’s so boring that I swear the percentage stays the same no matter how much I read. I’m giving it one more shot before I write my rant.

3 times?!?! Put the book down and walk away, reading time is precious.

Haha! I know, right? What was I thinking? You’re like just write that damn rant already. 😝

No, you need to get to the last like 100 pages before it gets less confusing and stuff starts to happen. But according to some people I’ve talked to, the rest of the books are not nearly as slow or as confusing.

Hmm… I just looked and Kindle says I have over 3 hours left in the book. Should I make it a personal challenge for this month to finish it? I’m thinking about it. Everyone says it takes until around 40-60% to get into it. I’m just not one of those people who keeps reading when nothing is happening. I suppose I will make an effort.

Yeah, it’s pretty slow to begin. But I suspect that’s because there’s so much mythology. So I guess it’s the worldbuilding that’s not done very skillfully. Personally, I’m not a very big fan of the paranormal genre, but this one has an interesting story, I think.

I usually am a huge fan of paranormal and fantasy, which is why I think I was so disappointed. I’ll try one more time I guess. 🙂

I love fantasy. It’s just the paranormal subgenre that doesn’t appeal to me much.
LikeLiked by 2 people
Yeah, I guess Twilight sort of overhyped that whole genre to the point it’s a turnoff.
LikeLiked by 1 person
It never really appealed to me, tbh. I like it in film/television, but as far as YA paranormal goes… just not really my cupper. I mean, I do read it, just not that much. Just like with YA contemporary.

I had a couple of videos about series I will not be finishing back when I made videos. But I should probably update that list. This is a good idea for a post!

Yes!!! A lot of the ideas I had for videos, I am now sharing via blog post. So it’s good to not throw those ideas out =D

I read Ink and Bone- The Great Library, which is the first book in a series and was not engaged by it at all. It had such tropes and I tire of every YA fantasy/science fiction book having to be a series.

Right?!?! I completely understand you!

You know some of these are actually favourite series of mine. I really enjoyed The Bone Season and Daughter of Smoke and Bone so I’m sorry you didn’t.
But I agree with you in Unearthly, I read the first book and although I didn’t have any real issues with it it didn’t really grab me enough to make me want to pick up the next one.
I’m looking forwards to seeing part two of your list now! 🙂

I feel like one of those people who don’t really like popular series (exceptions for some). But I completely agree with you when it comes to Unearthly also. I also didn’t have a problem but it was forgettable and not genuine. Thanks for always reading and commenting sweets!

I like a few popular series, and I don’t like others. It kind of just depends on the story and the characters and all. I loved Daughter of Smoke and Bone but not Red Queen, guess it’s just my personal taste when it comes to book 🙂
I read Unearthly ages ago and was going to pick up the next book but then, yeah like you said, it was forgettable so I didn’t in the end.
That’s all right! 🙂

I just sat & read through all your comments Gretchen! & through it all my heart just ached for Daughter of Smoke & Bone HAHA! Laini Taylor is such an oddball author, her writing is so lush in detail that yes it can slow u down quite a bit. Night of Cake & Puppets will forever me by fave of hers & it’s a novella so go figure lol. I can also totally understand the Raven Boys, it does take forever & a day to get to the meat. I swear I must have almost quit a gazillion times but I’m glad I didn’t. It’s hit or miss with ol’ Maggie, but i’ll share more of my thoughts on her….on ur next post lol.

lol yes!!! Laini creates a beautiful world and those characters are beyond beautiful. I would actually love to see it on the big screen but I can’t do it anymore…well you read my comments lmao so I’ll say no more. We can discuss Raven Cycle on my next post for sure. Maggie is one of those iffy authors in the book world, either people love her books or hate it.

I completely agree on Maggie lol & YES OMG! Lainis dream world on the big screen would be so engrossing! She could have my $ for that 😂😂😂

That’s interesting about the Alice in Zombieland series. I have the first one sitting on my shelf that I said I was going to start reading back in May… it’s still sitting on my shelf, unread. That kinda puts me off reading it, but I’m sure I will one day get to it.

You should read it! A lot of people who’ve read it said they couldn’t tell there were religious aspects so maybe it’s just me since I was deeply raised into that. Would love to hear your thoughts though!

I probably will read it at some point, I will be sure to review it once I do!

I was hesitant to read some of the books you posted, so it’s good to know…
I liked Alice in Zombieland…and I liked Daughter of Smoke and Bone, though I’m still working through it…
I don’t understand the prob with AIZ…I don’t know the Bible too well, and I didn’t think there was enough allusion to compare it to the Wonderland namesake, but I don’t know about the other stuff you mentioned. I liked the series though it was completely different than what I expected. But I guess we all like different books, and that’s what makes this community so diverse.
I’ll have to check out these themes in the book you mentioned…because now I’m incredibly curious (I’m a daughter of a Jewish lawyer and a Catholic housewife, so I’m Christmas, not Christian. We just celebrated holidays for presents…)

Yes I completely understand. My parents are Liberal Christians so their way of thinking and doing things are a little different from other Christians we see. I’m not sure if the author still has her converting to Christianity story but she would also be considered a Liberal Christian. She mentions some people I had recognized that are pretty famous in the Liberal Christian world. From what I remember with AIZ, in order to kill the zombies you need faith and be in a spirit form…which is totally something Christians teach that comes from the Bible “walk by faith and not by sight”..she also just had tons of other themes. Which I mean, I think it’s great for all the Christian YA readers who feel like they have strict parents and can’t read anything but Christianity. It just wasn’t for me due to my own experience with religion and me not wanting to do anything with that stuff (trauma). My parents believe Jesus was born in another time not on Christmas, so we celebrate just for the presents too.

Oh, very interesting. I never thought of that. The faith, the spirit form, the waiting room in between worlds (being a witness)…you’re right!
Wow, I see it through new eyes, lol.
Thanks for the explanation!

I tried soooooo hard to like The Daughter of Smoke and Bone but failed miserably. Moreover, I was silly enough to buy entire trilogy at once hoping to fall in love with it. It turned out to be one of the worst books I’ve read in my life. I struggled so badly to connect to the characters or imagine the world setting, which is such a pity! Everything in The Daughter of Smoke and Bone is so beautiful and I’m just here feeling like I can’t break up with that one lovely person 😦

I completely understand!!!! But at last, you are not the only one who couldn’t get into it. And I use to do the same as you, buy all the books in a series without reading the first and that seriously was hurting my pockets so I stopped that! Now, I just read the first book and if I like it, then I buy the second and while reading the second and I also like well…I’m pretty sure you can guess the cycle lol.
