Series I Will Not Be Finishing – Part 1

There was a time when I was a booktuber and posted a video about this but I wanted to share with you the series I will not be finishing. This will be posted in two parts because it’s a long list! I’ll let you know why I won’t be finishing these series. The titles of each book will lead you to the Goodreads page if you’re interested picking it up.

17969353-2Torn by K.A. Robinson is a New Adult series. This series includes 7 books and I only read the first book, rated it a 2 star. I couldn’t stand the the hardcore love triangle and the Main Character just highly got on my nerves. I didn’t understand the whole “he’s like my brother” to “we are now dating”….girl what? The only thing I enjoyed was the writing and how fast paced it was. Other than that? No thanks.

18775299Collide by Gail McHugh is also a New Adult. This one is a duology. I was actually rooting for this book till the drama got repetitive and another Main Character that is super annoying. I didn’t agree with any of her decisions. I liked that the story was written in 3rd person so we get to see both main characters thought process. But that’s about it. I don’t care for the characters to read the other book.

13597755Hexed (The Witch Hunter) by Michelle Krys I LOVED THE FIRST BOOK!!!! I had high hopes for this witchy YA series till the 2nd book came out and the author decided to through in every single YA Trope possible. I don’t understand why she did that, it was going great. The tropes were not needed but then again that’s just my opinion. Wah!!!

17199504The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon I really wanted to like this book but I couldn’t do it. The whole glossary in the back of the book just killed it for me. I read for enjoyment and I honestly felt like I was in school again scrolling to the back of the textbook to find the definition. No thanks.

20758104Chaos Walking Trilogy by Patrick Ness I read about 150 pages of this book and then DNFed (did not finish) it. I couldn’t do it anymore. So slow! I did hear the series gets better, however, I am at a point with my reading that I don’t like wasting my time on books I am not interested in. Nor do I like to force myself through a book.

7488244Unearthly by Cynthia Hand is a nephilim/fallen angels series which I love reading those kinds of books!!! I enjoyed this book, however, I felt like it was very much the same as other Fallen Angel YA books I have read so I won’t be continuing them. It didn’t feel authentic to me.

16070143-2Teardrop by Lauren Kate is pretty much a Atlantis/underwater-ish kind of book and I feel like these books with this theme aren’t done right. The first book was so slow and although I did buy the second book, I will not be picking it up. Especially after reading some of the reviews on Goodreads and also seeing the drop in ratings compared to the 1st book. I can’t even remember most of the book. It’s one of those forgettable books.

8490112Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor I loved the first book and then the second book I found to be awfully slow so once I had started the third book, I was over it. I read about 80 pages and couldn’t do it anymore. I have no interest in finishing the last book. I have so many other books I would rather read. The world was beautifully written and the characters were super cool but I’ll pass.

11300302White Rabbit Chronicles by Gena Showalter. Soooooooo here’s my problem with this one. I’m a pastors daughter and I was born and raised in the Christian religion (I don’t consider myself a Christian) but I learned A LOT about the Bible, etc. While reading this book, I found Christian themes in this book and I honestly felt like I was reading the Bible with zombies in it (no offense if you have your own beliefs) and I just couldn’t do it. I couldn’t differentiate between the Bible and this book. I was honestly rolling my eyes SO FREAKING MUCH! When I went to the authors website, I read about her converting to Christianity and everything all made sense to me. I definitely will not be reading this at all.

And that is it for this post, I will be posting part 2 in 2 days. Have you read any of these books? What did you think of them?

  1. Awww man! I’m sad to hear that about the Alice in Zombieland series. That’s one I’ve been wanting to read but now I’m torn because well I’m not sure I want to read that kind of material (since I’m an atheist and all). I’d be rolling my eyes too 😣

    • The world is beautiful and the characters were super cool to imagine. But like you said it does get tiresome and since I already experienced that with the second and third book, I just don’t have the strength to finish it when I can get to other books that won’t make me feel bored or slumpy. The last book got me into a major reading slump. =/

  2. I almost bought The Bone Season a few days ago. I was on the fence and now I think I’ll skip it. And 7 books with a love triangle? Oh, hell no! I don’t blame you for giving up on that one. I own Daughter of Smoke and Bone on Kindle and I bought the other two on a bargain sale in hardback. I still haven’t read a single page. I’ve heard they’re a bit slow. Can’t wait to see what’s on part 2. 🤗

  3. I read Ink and Bone- The Great Library, which is the first book in a series and was not engaged by it at all. It had such tropes and I tire of every YA fantasy/science fiction book having to be a series.

  4. You know some of these are actually favourite series of mine. I really enjoyed The Bone Season and Daughter of Smoke and Bone so I’m sorry you didn’t.
But I agree with you in Unearthly, I read the first book and although I didn’t have any real issues with it it didn’t really grab me enough to make me want to pick up the next one.
I’m looking forwards to seeing part two of your list now! 🙂

    • I feel like one of those people who don’t really like popular series (exceptions for some). But I completely agree with you when it comes to Unearthly also. I also didn’t have a problem but it was forgettable and not genuine. Thanks for always reading and commenting sweets!

  5. I just sat & read through all your comments Gretchen! & through it all my heart just ached for Daughter of Smoke & Bone HAHA! Laini Taylor is such an oddball author, her writing is so lush in detail that yes it can slow u down quite a bit. Night of Cake & Puppets will forever me by fave of hers & it’s a novella so go figure lol. I can also totally understand the Raven Boys, it does take forever & a day to get to the meat. I swear I must have almost quit a gazillion times but I’m glad I didn’t. It’s hit or miss with ol’ Maggie, but i’ll share more of my thoughts on her….on ur next post lol.

  6. That’s interesting about the Alice in Zombieland series. I have the first one sitting on my shelf that I said I was going to start reading back in May… it’s still sitting on my shelf, unread. That kinda puts me off reading it, but I’m sure I will one day get to it.

  7. I was hesitant to read some of the books you posted, so it’s good to know…
I liked Alice in Zombieland…and I liked Daughter of Smoke and Bone, though I’m still working through it…
I don’t understand the prob with AIZ…I don’t know the Bible too well, and I didn’t think there was enough allusion to compare it to the Wonderland namesake, but I don’t know about the other stuff you mentioned. I liked the series though it was completely different than what I expected. But I guess we all like different books, and that’s what makes this community so diverse.
I’ll have to check out these themes in the book you mentioned…because now I’m incredibly curious (I’m a daughter of a Jewish lawyer and a Catholic housewife, so I’m Christmas, not Christian. We just celebrated holidays for presents…)

    • Yes I completely understand. My parents are Liberal Christians so their way of thinking and doing things are a little different from other Christians we see. I’m not sure if the author still has her converting to Christianity story but she would also be considered a Liberal Christian. She mentions some people I had recognized that are pretty famous in the Liberal Christian world. From what I remember with AIZ, in order to kill the zombies you need faith and be in a spirit form…which is totally something Christians teach that comes from the Bible “walk by faith and not by sight”..she also just had tons of other themes. Which I mean, I think it’s great for all the Christian YA readers who feel like they have strict parents and can’t read anything but Christianity. It just wasn’t for me due to my own experience with religion and me not wanting to do anything with that stuff (trauma). My parents believe Jesus was born in another time not on Christmas, so we celebrate just for the presents too.

  8. I tried soooooo hard to like The Daughter of Smoke and Bone but failed miserably. Moreover, I was silly enough to buy entire trilogy at once hoping to fall in love with it. It turned out to be one of the worst books I’ve read in my life. I struggled so badly to connect to the characters or imagine the world setting, which is such a pity! Everything in The Daughter of Smoke and Bone is so beautiful and I’m just here feeling like I can’t break up with that one lovely person 😦
