May Wrap-Up 2016

First off, I just have to say that it’s really cool/weird at the same time to do a blog post of a monthly wrap up. I’m use to recording it and posting it on YouTube but I secretly like this way more lol.

This month I read a total of 7 books and I’m just going to jump right into it.

1.The Girl On The Train by Paula Hawkins ★★★★★
For people who like unreliable characters, suspense, and mental health.
I absolutely loved this book and I cannot wait for the movie. I loved the narration and how unreliable the characters were, I think that added so much to the story.

2. He Will Be My Ruin by K.A. Tucker ★★★
If you like suspense, psychological thrillers with a bit a mystery.
For people who don’t read much of this genre, maybe you’ll like it. I found the ending very predictable and it just felt flat to me.

3. A Court of Mist and Fury (ACOTAR #2) by  Sarah J. Maas ★★★★★
ALL THE FREAKING STARS!!!!!! MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE OF THE MONTH!!! I need to re-read this book already. I absolutely loved this. This is the second book to A Court of Thorns and Roses. If you like Sarah J. Maas, Fantasy, New Adult, Angst, Hades and Persephone then try this.

4. Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles #1) by Marissa Meyer ★★★★★
Fairy Retelling (Cinderella), Sci-Fi, Young Adult
I thought this book was really CUTE! I had it on my shelf for ages but I’m happy that I finally picked it up and really enjoyed it.

5. Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles #2) by Marissa Meyer ★★★
Fairy Retelling (Little Red Riding Hood), Sci-Fi, Young Adult
This is the second installment to The Lunar Chronicles. This book also felt very flat to me. I eventually will continue with this series but once Scarlet leaves the bad taste left in my mouth.

6. City of Bones (TMI #1) by Cassandra Clare ★★★★
Paranormal, Young Adult, Urban Fantasy

7. City of Ashes (TMI #2) by Cassandra Clare ★★★★
Paranormal, Young Adult, Urban Fantasy
I’ll be doing a review for this some time this week. I’m still enjoying this book.

  1. Awesome reviews! I in fact didn’t enjoy The Girl on a Train as much as everyone else. It was difficult for me to get into it and just didn’t capture my attention unfortunately. Happy reading

  2. Love this list!!! I just recently read The Girl On the Train (last month). I can’t wait for the movie! I need to read the Sarah J Maas book and I haven’t read your second book on the list. But everything else I’ve read and loved!!! I did a total of 10 books and couldn’t believe it! I’ve never read that many.

  3. All really popular titles! Well, besides the 2nd one; I don’t remember having seen that one before. Anyways, great post 🙂 I enjoyed Cinder myself, besides having found it predictable.

  7. Great may wrap up! Definitely did the little fan girl dance when I scrolled to see City of Bones and City of Glass. Makes me happy when someone else is enjoying my favourite series!

  11. Regarding The Girl on the Train, the movie is now out, of course, and still in theaters. I haven’t read the book yet but I mean to do it before seeing the movie. My partner, who has read it and loved it, was seriously disappointed by the movie, though. Mostly, because it is reset to North America. Not that she has anything against the States, just that it changed alot of the atmospheres.

    Thinking of a couple other books here, I think fairy tale retelling is a damned hard trick to pull off well and really justify recasting the original stories. It’s no good just updating the setting or giving it a feminist twist, you still have to craft a good story out of it that truly enthralls the reader. Tough call.

    I’ve just bought a copy of A Court of Mist and Fury and can’t wait to get into it – it looks really excellent!

    • Book to movie adaptations never capture the whole essence of a book. I did watch The Girl on Train and enjoyed the movie for what it was, not really thinking about the book. The movie definitely left out some parts of the books but again, book to movie adaptations just aren’t good. The setting of North America MOST DEFINITELY threw me off. I was like “wait what?” because I live in New York and that shocked me.

      • It’s true that book to movie is a hard one. I guess you did the right thing taking it on its own terms. In a way it’s a totally different form of storytelling, a different art form.

        Maybe they should always change out the titles in that case and just put a footnote somewhere on the credits saying “Story and Characters based on an idea by X in the novel Y” or something like that.

        Anyway, I still have to read the book and it’s still a few books down on my TBR pile!
