Recent Reads and Mini Reviews #3

Hey there!! I hope you are all doing well today! Welcome to another recent reads and mini reviews. It feels like such a long time ago that I read these three books that I’ll be talking about today. For today, I’ll be talking about Love and Other Words, Next Year In Havana, and The Bride Test.

All my thoughts are spoiler free

img_0011Title: Love and Other Words
Author: Christina Lauren
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publisher: Gallery Books
Rating: 3 stars

Synopsis:
Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away.

But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos—the first and only love of her life—the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve. Once upon a time, Elliot was Macy’s entire world—growing from her gangly bookish friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her mother…only to break it on the very night he declared his love for her.

Told in alternating timelines between Then and Now, teenage Elliot and Macy grow from friends to much more—spending weekends and lazy summers together in a house outside of San Francisco devouring books, sharing favorite words, and talking through their growing pains and triumphs. As adults, they have become strangers to one another until their chance reunion. Although their memories are obscured by the agony of what happened that night so many years ago, Elliot will come to understand the truth behind Macy’s decade-long silence, and will have to overcome the past and himself to revive her faith in the possibility of an all-consuming love.

I really wanted to love this book. I thought it had a lot of potential. This book was so different from other Christina Lauren books I’ve read. However, Love and Other Words just wasn’t for me. The reason behind them not talking/seeing each other for many years was not shocking to me. I felt like there was a lot of build up for a mediocre plot. Also, the teenage sex scenes made me super uncomfortable. I skimmed over those parts because I do not want to read about teenagers humping. The writing was well done and the chapters from past to present were also well done. I found it odd how one particular character acted towards the situation that the MC was going through. I expected more turmoil. Overall, it was a cute book. It just didn’t impact me as much as I thought it would. The writing in this book is definitely a lot better than Christina Lauren’s previous books.

CAN WE JUST TALK ABOUT THIS BOOK FOR A MOMENT?!?!?!? ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE BOOKS. I DID NOT SEE THIS ONE COMING!! I seriously thought it was just going to be another read but this book right here?!?!? This one is everything. I will talk about it forever. The writing, the politics, the romance, the family relationships, the plot, EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT! The Cuban representation was perfectly executed and I honestly feel like that has to do with the fact that the author is Cuban herself. This shows how important own voices really is. This book was a masterpiece. We got rich detail of Cuba, Cubans, their culture, their food, their history. I found myself crying, happy, sad, and transported to this world. It’s politically heavy, however that’s what I loved even more about it. The two perspectives from both Grandmother in 1958 and Granddaughter present day was well done. I enjoyed both parts equally. Even if I had to stop mid chapter, once I opened the book, I knew which chapter I was in. I would like to add that this book is very quotable. I highly recommend Next Year in Havana with all my heart.

39338454Title: The Bride Test (The Kiss Quotient #2)
Author: Helen Hoang
Genre: Contemporary Romance

The Bride Test was my May Book of The Month pick. I heard that you do not have to read The Kiss Quotient in order to read this one which is exactly what I did. I was excited to read this book after hearing so much praise for The Kiss Quotient. I was excited to read a cute contemporary romance with Asian Representation. However, I disliked this book a whole lot. I had a lot of problems with it. The Asian and Autistic representation was spot on, my problems lied with the plot/storyline. I felt uncomfortable with all the forced interactions, all the awkward mentions of his dick, and lastly my biggest problem; the secret that Esme was hiding from him. The secret she was hiding from him was something that really made my time reading this book unenjoyable because of personal reasons. It was hard to read this book objectively when my anxiety was yelling in frustration lol. In the end, I felt this book was very rushed. The Bride Test is only 296 pages. However, it could’ve lasted a little longer when throughout the book problem after problem was reoccurring and all of a sudden we get a ta-da moment. Overall, writing was good and so were the characters, the plot/storyline were my biggest problems.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

two-star-rating

18775297

Synopsis from Goodreads:

One-night stands are supposed to be with someone convenient, or wickedly persuasive, or regrettable. They aren’t supposed to be with someone like him.

But after a crazy Vegas weekend celebrating her college graduation—and terrified of the future path she knows is a cop-out—Mia Holland makes the wildest decision of her life: follow Ansel Guillaume—her sweet, filthy fling—to France for the summer and just…play.

When feelings begin to develop behind the provocative roles they take on, and their temporary masquerade adventures begin to feel real, Mia will have to decide if she belongs in the life she left because it was all wrong, or in the strange new one that seems worlds away.

***warning*** since this book is targeted for mature audiences, my review will not hold back and should be considered for mature audiences as well.

Me reading this book:

giphy-20

This is my first Christina Lauren book, these authors are very well known for their Beautiful Bastards series that I have yet to read, nor do I really care at this point.

I want to start by saying that this book is purely for entertainment and you should never follow the footsteps of the main character.

We meet Mia who is the quiet girl who doesn’t do anything crazy and has just graduated with a Bachelors degree, alongside her two best friends Lola and Harlow. Who in fact happen to be on the wilder side. They go to Vegas for the weekend to celebrate their graduation and Mia meets a French boy, Ansel, and things go from there.

I was really loving the beginning of the story, although it is definitely instalove but I thought it was cute. And I was missing my dose of New Adult. I even told myself “omg this is like the New Adult version of Anna and the French Kiss”….yeah…no..

Till Ansel buys Mia a flight to France for the summer and while Mia is in France, NOTHING IS HAPPENING BUT WILD ROLE PLAY SEX AND MORE ROLE PLAY SEX AND EVEN MORE ROLE PLAY SEX because Mia has a problem cumming as her own self and they’re better at playing pretend. Which I mean, cool, if you’re into that stuff then have at it but my whole issue was that, the real core problems weren’t being talked about or anything. They were being shoved under the rug like nobody’s business. There’s absolutely no communication between Mia and Ansel, he’s a lawyer and works a lot, she’s living in his place for the summer and they still barely know one another.

Also, Mia left with Ansel to France in matter of like 2 days of meeting him because she’s trying to figure out her own life.

Then there’s this whole person that keeps being mentioned but Ansel won’t directly talk about such person which kind of draws into the “plot” and I actually disliked this because it definitely gave me 50 shades of Grey feels. The whole hiding, lying, and betrayal kind of thing is just something I don’t tolerate at all. Plus it played into Mia looking like a weakling which I didn’t appreciate, Bella and Anastasia 3.0

This book is almost 400 pages long. And I want to say that about the first 50 pages things happen, then for 300 pages its just descriptive sex, role play, her walking around France while he’s busy being a lawyer and is barely around, and then the last like 40 pages there’s a “plot twist” annnndddddd then the book ends.

This book and the characters in it were just really problematic and no one should make this into #relationshipgoals

Listen, I know that New Adult gets a lot of crap but I’ve read thought provoking New Adult Romance books that have literally made me cry because of it’s plot, storyline, and characters. This one did not deliver.

Would I recommend this? Nope! Will I read the rest of the series? Nope!

1. “TALE AS OLD AS TIME” – A POPULAR THEME, TROPE OR SETTING YOU WILL NEVER GET BORED OF READING.

THE BAD BOY!!!!!!! Oh I will never get tired of the misunderstood bad boy who you hate in the first few chapters and then end up loving because he makes all the sense in the world. I always fall for that trap…I mean trope.

2. BELLE – A BOOK YOU BOUGHT FOR IT’S BEAUTIFUL COVER THAT’S JUST AS BEAUTIFUL INSIDE TOO

23395680-2I mean, I got it as a gift after I read the library edition..so it still counts right? Gosh this book is so beautiful without the jacket on and the inside IS SO AMAZING!!!! (read through documents, IMs, emails, not your regular book format) One of my favorite books. It’s a 5 star read for me.

3. BEAST – A BOOK YOU DIDN’T EXPECT MUCH FROM BUT PLEASANTLY SURPRISED YOU.

18344534This book is a New Adult and I wasn’t really expecting it to be amazing as it turned out to be. One of my favorite New Adult books that I love oh so much. It’s not just the romance but the past of these two characters that bind them together is beautiful. I plan on doing a Mini Review on it soon so watch out for that!

4. GASTON – A BOOK EVERYONE LOVES THAT YOU DON’T

17675462Gasp, kick, and cry all you want….I WILL NEVER GIVE THIS SERIES ANOTHER TRY. I just can’t do it. I have a more in depth reason as to why here.

5. LEFOU – A LOYAL SIDEKICK YOU CAN’T HELP BUT LOVE MORE THAN THEIR COUNTER PART.

11235712-2IKO!!!!! Please no spoilers!!! I haven’t read Cress and Winter yet, but I love me some Iko! Iko is an android, btw. Iko is so loyal and my heart panicked a few times when I thought bad things would happen.

6. MRS POTTS, CHIP, LUMIER & COGSWORTH – A BOOK THAT HELPED YOU THROUGH A DIFFICULT TIME OR THAT TAUGHT YOU SOMETHING VALUABLE

270730I read Crank when I was teenager. My teenage years were really hard but getting lost within Hopkins writing made me feel better about myself. I almost got into drugs and this book definitely helped me see the light on that world. Crank is based off Hopkins daughter who’s an addict.

7. “SOMETHING THERE” – A BOOK OR A SERIES THAT YOU WEREN’T INTO AT FIRST BUT PICKED UP TOWARDS THE END.

10929432The Archived by Victoria Schwab was really slow in the beginning and I almost DNFed it but then I reached past 100 pages and it got sooooooo good I couldn’t put it down.

8. “BE OUR GUEST” – A FICTIONAL CHARACTER YOU’D LOVE TO HAVE OVER FOR DINNER
