Standalone Sunday

Hello everyone! Standalone Sunday is a weekly meme created by Megan@bookslayerReads. This meme is about Standalone book (that is not part of a series) that you loved and would recommend. Check out her lovely blog, she’s a sweetheart ❤

13579626A tale of family, ghosts, secrets, and mystery, in which the lives of the living and the dead intersect in shocking, surprising, and moving ways

Wealthy Richard Walker has just died, leaving behind his country house full of rooms packed with the detritus of a lifetime. His estranged family—bitter ex-wife Caroline, troubled teenage son Trenton, and unforgiving daughter Minna—have arrived for their inheritance.

But the Walkers are not alone. Prim Alice and the cynical Sandra, long dead former residents bound to the house, linger within its claustrophobic walls. Jostling for space, memory, and supremacy, they observe the family, trading barbs and reminiscences about their past lives. Though their voices cannot be heard, Alice and Sandra speak through the house itself—in the hiss of the radiator, a creak in the stairs, the dimming of a light bulb.

The living and dead are each haunted by painful truths that will soon surface with explosive force. When a new ghost appears, and Trenton begins to communicate with her, the spirit and human worlds collide—with cataclysmic results.

One of my favorite books of all time despite the low ratings on Goodreads, it’s haunting and the story is rich with eeriness. The story is told by the family living in the house and the Ghosts who also reside. This is the perfect read for Autumn/Winter. Have you read this book? Let me know in the comments!!

  1. I don’t know why whenever you’ve mentioned this book I always thought you were referring to Room by Emma Donaghue 🙈😂🙈😂 this book sounds so interesting & gives me Beetlejuice vibes (one of my faves) just cuz if you have watched it, you know that the dead linger behind in the house when a new cpl moves in & they haunt the house lol. I need to read more standalones now cuz I used to only read them years ago & my memory is terrbile LOL!

  2. That cover is amazing. It tells a story in itself, as a good cover should.

May I ask a question that is tangential to this discussion? I have a series, but they are of stand alone adventures. Each is a whimsical, themed, paranormal story. I do not know how to reference this sort of stand-alone series. Any suggestions?

    Happy Reading!

  3. Ohh, this sounds like a really interesting book, and the perfect read for Halloween as well. 🙂 It’s not something I’d normally pick up but I am looking to branch out into other genres, and given you’ve given it high praise I may have to check this one out myself as well.
    Great pick Gretchen! 😀

  4. I have passed this book so many times in my school library…I really should give it a chance. I stopped reading Oliver after trying to read the one about people who perform dares for a grand prize…I don’t remember the name but I couldn’t get into the book. I guess I am still hoping for something like Delirium again from her. I can wait to read Replica!
