My Initial Thoughts After I Finished:
My Thoughts Now That It’s Been A Few Hours:
It’s still a joke. Sarah has played us.
*screams*
*catches a tantrum*
*laughs hysterically*
I honestly feel like my 3 star rating is being generous on my end. I am so baffled that a very loved series for me has become a parallel universe to A Court of Mist and Fury. No, but seriously. HAVE YOU READ THAT ENDING??? LMFAO!!!!!!!! I sent Lilly from Lair of Books so many voicenotes after finishing this book, I probably sounded like a maniac #sorrynotsorry
Okay okay okay..on to the review.
I was really happy when I got my copy in the mail and at first I was loving it and breathing it in. We get different perspectives from the characters which I always tend to love books with multiple POV. Some of my all time favorite characters from this book are Manon Blackbeak, Aedion Ashryver, Lysandra, and Elide. I couldn’t get enough of Manon. If Sarah had written a whole book about her, I would read it. I wouldn’t read Sarah’s grocery list but I would read a book about Manon. I would also read a book about Aedion and Lysandra because they’re total babes and I want to protect them forever.
This book follows the quest of Aelin returning to her throne in the mist of a war that’s brewing and centered around her. She is the key to all of this that’s going on. She must also gain allies to win this war and take back what’s rightfully hers.
Whatever. The whole plot of this book just really confused me and SJM was adding all this extra stuff to the plot that made no sense. I mean the writing was good and fast paced. I felt like for a nearly 700 page book, I finished it quickly considering I have a full time job and child (my dog!! my child is my dog).
However, SJM was doing the thing again and that thing is: summarizing.
SHE WAS SUMMARIZING IN A NEARLY 700 PAGE BOOK! You want to know why? Cause she was busy hooking everybody up and writing all these unnecessary sex scenes. Listen, the sex scenes in A Court of Thorns and Roses and A Court of Mist and Fury are freaking fine by me because it’s New Adult Fantasy being told as a Beauty and The Beast/Hades and Persephone retelling. THIS SERIES DOESN’T NEED THAT THOUGH!!!
These characters are in the middle of a war, flirting, thinking about body parts, getting all hot between the legs. And SJM pretty much wrote the same romance for each of the couples. Trust me, I love romance and I love all the steamy stuff but reading some of this was awkward. Can you not? Can we focus on killing Erawan, Maeve, and winning the throne back? Can we focus on the plot? Can we focus on Aelin getting her court and throne in order? Can we?
What SJM should’ve done was focus on the plot rather than summarizing it and writing those lengthy sex scenes.
OH-MY-GOSH and what was up with everyone snarling, growling, and hissing? Are you a savage or human/fae? Cause this is what I pictured:
Aelin was really annoying to me in this book particularly. I disagreed with a lot of her choices, disagreed with how she treated some of the characters, and I most definitely didn’t like her “holier than thou” attitude. Like miss fire breathing bitch queen needs to humble herself and learn a thing or two. Cause last time I checked she was running through like an assassin.
Overall, this book is forgettable and my least favorite. I liked the pacing, I liked reading about certain characters, and I like the world that SJM has created. However, I just didn’t like the ACOMAF 2.0 she pulled, they are way too similar. Maybe if you haven’t read A Court of Mist and Fury, this book will be up there for you.
Have you read this book? What did you think?

OMG!!!! I haven’t laughed so hard reading a review! you managed to capture all of my initial feelings that I couldn’t discuss with you because I was way too ahead in this massive imitation tome. I swear if I hadn’t already changed my rating/review a ziliion times, I would continue taking stars away. It’s def a 2.5 now LMAO! love the giphs, the hissing & snarling taking place was ridic & you are 100% correct, THIS series did NOT need all of the couples woo hooing. 5 books later, the book right before the last one should have been about getting down to business. Instead in the middle of being slaughtered they’re coppin feels instead of pissin their pants? lol I can’t, Aelin as a character is abhorrent. I was way too nice in my review lol, it stops with Empire of Storms. I don’t even know whether I’ll finish the series…might pull a Divergent *shrugs shoulders*

LMFAO I won’t even bother pre-ordering the next book. Honestly at this point, when I think about giving it a 1 star, it doesn’t hurt me or make me cringe. Cause this was so bad. I agree with you also, it should’ve gone down to business. I honestly thought this book was going to be political/war based not the acomaf 2.0 romance b.s. story we got. LIKE WHO GETS WET IN THEIR PANTIES WHILE MAEVE IS ON THE WAY WITH SHIPS?!?!? Apparently, they do lol.

That’s what I’m saying!! Nah I’m not pre-ordering & I’ll get to it when I get to it. Bumped it down &!stripped her of “auto/buy authors” privileges

I just finished this and have mixed feelings as well! It definitely focused way too much on coupling the characters off with each other.

Yes! Agreed. The plot should’ve been the main focus

LOVE THIS! The gifs are perfect hahaha I felt like Maas was just trying to appease the thirsty masses after ACOMAF (which I freely admit I was a part of haha) but the smut was just way overdone and unnecessary

Completely agree with your whole comment. ACOMAF was beautifully done!!! And it makes sense to the story because like I said it’s a romantic retelling based in a Fantasy setting. I can fangirl over ACOMAF allllll day! EoS didn’t need that though!!! It was way too overdone and sooooooo utterly ridiculous. I was literally rolling my eyes the whole time. I just felt like Maas had nothing to write about so she copy and pasted and didn’t care because she knew she was going to make $$$ off it anyway.

I love this review!! It made me laugh so much! I’m so conflicted as to whether I want to continue this series or not. I wasn’t into Queen of Shadows, so I just feel like I’m not going to like this one at all.
I’m honestly so glad you hate the snarling too (and those gifs oh my god hahaha) it drives me crazy!!

LMAO! I am so happy you agree with me. Jeez, they sound like animals instead of humans/fae. I’m sorry that you weren’t into QoS. Some books aren’t for everyone. I loved QoS so I was super disappointed. Have you read ACOMAF?

Right?? I can’t take it seriously haha
Yeah, I’m not sure why I wasn’t into it, because I did really like all the other books in the series. I read ACOMAF a couple of months ago, and I did like it, but I think that’s what’s putting me off reading EoS too because so many people are saying that they’re so similar!

I love this review LOL. I haven’t read the second book in the series yet (I wasn’t all that impressed with ToG) but I love reading people’s reviews on EoS! It seems there’s a lot of mixed feelings about this one, especially because she tried to copy the steaminess of ACOMAF. I’m planning on continuing the series, but a lot of ppl say it gets pretty confusing and weird

I was loving the whole series till we got hit with this garbage lol! Don’t even bother reading this unless you want to laugh, then try to read the last 20 pages, you’re going to say “SHE COPIED AND PASTED AND EDITED THE NAMES FROM ACOMAF!”

I haven’t finished EoS yet but YES, Aelin thinks she’s the shit. You’re right, she needs to humble herself a little.
And I think SJM is a fantastic author and I can imagine how hard it is to write 2 VERY long books in one year, but still EOS and ACOMAF are way too similar.

It probably is hard but that’s no excuse to give out crappy books. I feel like she didn’t even put effort for EoS. Look forward to your thoughts on EoS!

Love this review!!!
What is up with people writing about people hissing?? Who hisses at people? Animals do that…but I can’t ever think of a time when I hissed at, snapped at, or otherwise tried to maul someone in anger.
Just. Weird.
And I agree: there’s a lot of shit going on from what you wrote. How do people even think about sex at a time like that? (Well, I would but I’m a crazy nympho who’s got an 18 year old lover…yeah, you heard me. So my thoughts aren’t exactly PC. But when there’s the chance of death? Well…still maybe…but not if I’m in a book!! ππ)
Nm. I can think about it anywhere apparently. Lol.
But I love your review. Honest and thoughtful. And I have to figure out how to get gifs to work on my blog!

Thanks so much!!! I go to giphy.com, save them, and then insert them as photos. It works out that way.
I can’t think of a time either when I was hissing or being an animal towards a person. I mean, sucked my teeth but that’s normal between humans right? lol.
AND OMG I AM DYING LAUGHING WITH YOUR SEX COMMENT!!!!!!!! I mean, I get if there’s sexual tension between the two but literally everyone was being a horndog lmao.

Well. Apparently they are all my relatives. Jk. π
No, but seriously…you save the GIFs on a comp? I’m guessing that’s the only way it would work…I have my iPad I use and when I save a GIF it ends up a still image. But it makes sense if you use a comp! Never thought about that!
Glad to make you laugh.
I must go and hiss at the neighbor’s dog now. It’s been giving me the stank eye for awhile now…c
